I spent a long time making this because it can be hard to care about what we cannot easily see!
 
From the road, grasslands can look like there isn't a lot going on. Often what we are actually seeing is generated farmland, while true native grasslands are now quite rare.
 
Beneath the surface, roots hold soil together, burrows connect animals, food is stored, young are raised, fungi move nutrients, carbon is pulled into the ground, and fossils remain from when this place was once an inland sea!
 
All of that underground work helps clean water, build fertile soil, move oxygen through living systems, and keep carbon out of the atmosphere. It supports wildlife, livestock, and us.
